Albert Franklin Burns Jr.'s Obituary

Albert F. Burns, Jr, 96, peacefully passed to his eternal reward on April 2, 2026 at his home in Cimarron. He was born on November 4, 1929 in Dodge City, to Albert and Viva (Baird) Burns.

Albert grew up on the family farm 17 miles north of
Cimarron. He attended school in Kalvesta through the 8th grade. He later attended Kansas City Bible College in Overland Park. He worked for various local farmers and helped build the grain elevator at Kalvesta. Albert joined the US Army in 1949.

He worked for Warner Angus Ranch near Dodge City before moving to Garden City where Albert worked for Hinkle Drilling and later Jewell Drilling in Ulysses. He later moved to Tulsa where he worked for American Airlines as an aircraft mechanic. He returned to Garden City in 1959 and opened Burns Auto Repair later moving the business to Cimarron where he and his father operated until 1968. Albert then joined with Delbert Pickle to form B&P Auto Parts in Cimarron where he remained until retiring in 1995.

After retiring in 1995 he enjoyed traveling, fishing, tinkering and spending winters at S. Padre Island in Texas where he liked to fish with his buddies from Alaska, Canada, and Michigan. He later met Betty Engler and they enjoyed traveling in a motorhome to Canada, Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Tennessee and Florida. They later moved to a home on Beaver Lake in Arkansas. Before he lost his vision, he enjoyed working on small engines and repairing antique tractors. Albert was a handman who could fix anything. They moved back to Cimarron in 2013.

He was a member of Cimarron Rotary Club, American Legion, Eagles Lodge, and Lost Bridge Community Church, where he served on the church board for several years.

Albert is survived by his companion and caregiver, Betty; two bonus sons, Mark and Jeff Engler; daughter, Linda Steele and Tom of Texas, son, Michael Burns of Cimarron; step daughter, Margie Sloan and Gary of Dodge City; brothers, Jerry Burns and Grace of Cimarron, Charles Burns and Vickie of Cimarron; sister-in-law, Kay Burns of Cimarron. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren; 9 step grandchildren and 18 step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margie; sister, Betty Hamilton; brothers, Bill and Ronnie Burns and friend and business partner Delbert Pickle.

Celebration of Life will be at 10:30am on Monday, April 6, 2026 at the Cimarron Nazarene Church with Rev. Tom Boese. Burial will follow at the Cimarron Cemetery with military honors by the KSARNG Military Honors and the SWKS Veterans Funeral Honor Guard.
