IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Annie
Smith
February 5, 1946 – December 25, 2023
My wife and our stepmom, Annie Arie Wengerd Unruh Smith was born February 5, 1946, to Solomon and Emma Wengerd of Belleville, Pennsylvania. She slipped quietly away in the early hours of Christmas morning, December 25, 2023, with loved ones by her side. The week leading to her passing she spent in Garden City, in the hospital. She went to her eternal reward at the age of 77.
Annie was born into a loving Amish family of ten children. Her twin brother, Samuel, was very special to her. Her parents also were special to her, and she especially enjoyed time spent around the table listening to her dad reading by lamp light. As a child, she learned to work very hard and started helping on the family farm at the young age of eleven, as was the custom with the Amish lifestyle. She attended the Amish school of Back Mountain Road in Belleville, Pennsylvania, where she received her eighth grade education.
Annie was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite on March 19, 1972 by Minister Sylvan Yoder at Belleville, Pennsylvania. Her faith was precious to her and she was confident in the Lord's leading throughout her life. She lived with the Menno Yoder family in Pennsylvania for a time and then chose to move to Wisconsin, where she joined the Alfred Koehn family. Mom Rosa was very special to Annie. She spent time volunteering at Window Rock and in Belize. Later, the Lord led her to Bonners Ferry, Idaho to teach school where she met Floyd Unruh. They were married on January 26, 1992. They had 17 happy years together and she gained the family she had always wanted. After Floyd's passing she was left very alone for six years. Mom Rosa introduced Annie to Ray Smith of Ingalls, Kansas giving Annie a new purpose for life. They were married on November 1, 2015. A special memory of Dad Ray and Mom Annie was going back to Annie's childhood home. She enjoyed her grandchildren, coffee friends, tea parties, quilting, traveling, and camping. She loved people and was very hospitable. Annie will be dearly missed by Ray and all the children.
Those left to cherish her memory: her husband, Ray and children, Doug (Rhoda) Smith, Sarah (Travis) Decker, Denise (Clinton) Koehn, Devin (Ashley) Smith; Floyd's children Arita Shelman, Carolyn (Denton) Wedel, Onalee (Greg) Dirks, Elaine (Wade) Harms, Gilbert (Lisa) Unruh; two brothers, David (Emma) Wengerd, Steven (Annie) Wengerd; 31 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; Ray's and Floyd's siblings; special nieces and nephews; and many more friends and family. Annie was preceded in death by her first husband, Floyd; one grandson; her father and mother; four brothers, including her twin brother Samuel; five sisters; ten brothers-in-law; and seven sisters-in-law.
