Sublette - Arthur Burt McKinley, 79, died July 7, 2012 at Satanta Long Term Care, Satanta. He was born on February 4, 1933 in Medicine Lodge, the son of A.W. and Jennie Rachael (Thrasher) McKinley.
After graduating from Medicine Lodge High School, Burt served in the US Army from 1953 to 1956, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. In 1957, he married Janette Kay Shaw. Burt attended the University of Kansas School of Law, graduating in 1960. He began practicing law in Sublette in 1962. In May of 1986, he married Twila Messerly. Burt was very active in the Sublette community. He served as mayor for several years and also announced many football games for Sublette High School. Mr. McKinley enjoyed golf and motorcycle touring. He is deeply loved and will be greatly missed, but his strong faith and commitment to God give his family comfort and hope.
He was a member of the Sublette Christian Church of Sublette.
Burt is survived by three sons, Michael Shaw McKinley and wife Jacqueline of Sunnyvale, California; Casey Scott McKinley and wife Denise of Oviedo, Florida; and Kerry Owen McKinley and wife Dawn of New Palestine, Indiana; five granddaughters, Ann, Rebecca, Kristine, Megan, and Katherine McKinley; one brother, G. Douglas McKinley and wife Jeannie of Bandera, Texas; one step-son, Donald Carl Messerly and wife Carol of Edmund, Oklahoma; two step daughters, Debra Jacques and husband Ed and Dana Watson and husband Kim both of Sublette; seven step grandsons, Jeff and Jon Jacques, Adam and Alex Watson, and Caleb, Zeb, and Zach Messerly; two step granddaughters, Katie Short and Kari Trevino; and 12 step great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Twila; his parents; one sister Virginia Johnson; and a step great grandson, Elijah Trevino.
Funeral service will be held at Sublette Christian Church on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 10:30 AM with Pastor David Erwin presiding. Burial will follow at Haskell County Cemetery in Sublette. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette on Friday, July 13, 2012 from Noon to 8:00 PM with the family receiving friends from 6-8 PM. Memorials are suggested to the Sublette Christian Church or the Satanta Long Term Care Unit in care of the funeral home.
