Dodge City - Barbara Jean Garcia, 61, died July 21, 2021 at her home in Dodge City after a long battle with cancer. She was born on May 27, 1960 in Dodge City, the daughter of William and Delores (Martinez) Garcia, Sr.
Barbara was a lifetime resident of Dodge City. She graduated from Dodge City High School in 1981. After graduation, Barbara worked a variety of jobs, including working at several fast food restaurants and motels before going to work at Wal-Mart.
Barbara enjoyed cooking and baking not only for herself but for family and friends. She loved her family. Barbara helped to raise her nephews, Christopher, Michael, and Jeremy Garcia and had a special place in her heart for her niece, Mia Jimenez, and her nephew, Diego Jimenez. She and her sister, Veronica, did almost everything together. Barbara had a loving heart and was always willing to help others when needed. She volunteered with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. Barbara also enjoyed music and spending time with her best companion, her dog, Libby.
Barbara is survived by siblings, Bill Garcia, Jr. of Garden City, Larry Garcia and wife Debra of Arizona, Veronica Martinez of Dodge City, Paul Garcia and wife Armida of Wichita, Daniel Garcia of Arizona, and Harold Garcia of Arizona; two God-daughters, Aly (Aahlicia) Pulido and Brittani Varela; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and two siblings, Lorraine Alvarado and Charles (Chuck) Garcia.
A book signing will be held at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, on Thursday, July 29, 2021from noon to 8:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City, on Friday July 30, 2021 at 10:00 AM. A rosary service will be on Friday, July 30, 2021 prior to the mass at 9:00 AM at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Cremation will follow the mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Cancer Center of Kansas in care of the funeral home. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
