Obituary

DODGE CITY - Barbara Kay Voss, 78, died July 26, 2021 at Manor of the Plains, Dodge City, after a long battle of illnesses.  She was born on April 21, 1943 at Ashland, Kansas, the daughter of Ben H. and Inez (Young) McKinley.

Barbara was born and raised in Ashland and graduated from Ashland High School. She then attended Ft. Hays State University where she received her bachelor's degree in early childhood education. Barbara used her degree to work as an Early Childhood Educator for twelve years at Arrowhead West until she retired in 1999. On March 1, 1990 she married her soul mate and love of her life, George Voss at Dodge City and was very happily married for 31 years.

She also had a wallpapering business with her sister, Shirley, where they wallpapered many homes and businesses in Dodge City. Barbara also enjoyed home doing home improvements such as tiling, reupholstering and often built her own furniture.  She was never afraid to tackle a project around the house.  She worked together with her sons Mitch and Brett on a house flip project.  She was an avid reader, loved beating Jeopardy questions, Trivial Pursuit and drinking Diet Coke.  She enjoyed traveling with her husband George on frequent trips to the Texas coast, New Mexico and especially their annual, family trip to Colorado, where she was the chauffer in the VW bus, for last 47 years with her sisters, Shirley and Sharon and their families. She has been described as "strong, loyal, sweet, stubborn and feisty".  She hosted all main holidays in her home with as many family members as possible.

Barbara's main lifelong devotion and love centered around her special needs son, David Hoffman.  She cared for him full time in her home until he moved on as an adult to reside at Arrowhead West.  She was always grateful to the many volunteers who would come to pattern him as a young child.

Barbara is survived by her husband, George Voss of Dodge City; two sons, Brett Hoffman of Dodge City and Mitch Hoffman and wife Dawn of Overland Park; step-children, Greg Voss of Bentonville, Arkansas and Audrey Voss of Tampa, Florida; ten grandchildren, Katie, Allie, Robert, Nick, Kyle, Devin, Sophie, Hailey, Hayden, and Carson; several great grandchildren; a sister, Sharon Partridge of Wichita; and many nieces and nephews and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Hoffman; a brother, Ben "Mac" McKinley and sister, Shirley Talbot.
