SUBLETTE-Bernice Kelman Holloway died on May 7, 2017, in Louisville, Colorado, at the age of 99. She was born February 1, 1918, in Kansas City, Kansas, to William O. and Gertrude (Scholtz) Kelman. In 1922 she moved with her family to Ensign, Kansas; later they resettled in Haskell County where she lived for most of the next 80 years.
She attended both Sublette Grade and High Schools, graduating in 1935. She also married Gilbert Holloway in l935. They had three children--Sharryl, Pamela, and Jay--before divorcing.
Bernice worked for a time at the Sublette Post Office and was later employed for 24 years with the Sublette School District, first as the high school secretary, then as the Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools until her retirement in 1982. At age 91, she moved to a retirement facility in Louisville, Colorado, to be near Sharryl and Jay. She lived there until her death.
Bernice enjoyed her family, including her brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Kay Kelman and their children; Bev, Steve, and Roger. She was always supportive of her children, grandchildren, and extended family in their many activities.
While living in Sublette, Bernice found much joy participating in many clubs and church activities, especially Eastern Star, Past Matrons, United Methodist Women, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to drive and proudly did so from age 12 into her 90s. She also liked to travel with her friends and family, visiting all 50 states and two foreign countries.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Gertie Kelman and her brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Kay Kelman. She is survived by her three children: Sharryl Davis (Jim) of Lafayette, CO; Pam Swank (Jim) of Melbourne, FL; and Jay Holloway (Nancy) of Louisville, CO. Her grandchildren are Mark Hawke (Elise), Katherine Davis, David Davis (Karie) Eric Swank, Erin Swank Ramos (Vince), Emily Swank, Niki Shenise (Tim), Zach Paluh (Mayumi), and Jake Paluh (Erika). Great grandchildren are Kristofer Girton, Taylor and Noah Davis, Joshua and Ana Hawke, Eli Shenise, and Archer Paluh. Also surviving are niece Beverly Kelman and nephews Steve Kelman (Kathy) and Roger Kelman and great nephews David Kelman (Shannon), Clark Kelman (Julie), and Hayes Kelman, and great niece Hilary Kelman.
Services will be held at the Sublette United Methodist Church on May 22, 2017, at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at the Haskell County Cemetery. Viewings will be held Saturday, May 20th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and Sunday, May 21 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Swaim Funeral Chapel in Sublette. There will also be a gathering for friends and family Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at the Haskell County Museum in Sublette. Memorials may be made to the Sublette United Methodist Church, the Sublette High School Alumni Association, and the Haskell County Museum.
