Our mother, Betty Sue (Copeland) Borth, 86, lost her battle with renal disease at Bethel Home with her family by her side on September 2, 2026.

She was born on March 4, 1940, to Evelyn and Mayo Copeland in McMinnville, Tennessee. She attended all her years of schooling in McMinnville and graduated in 1958 from McMinnville City High School. After graduation, she moved to Nashville, TN and worked at WSIX TV logging commercials. She moved back to McMinnville to begin work at the Southern Standard newspaper. Our father met her while purchasing a paper and later that day, told a friend, "I've just met the woman I'm going to marry."

Soon after, Mom married our father, Bob Surber, and they moved to Texas and when a career position in radio and television presented itself, they moved to Dodge City, KS. There, Cindy and Becky were born and in 1966, they moved to Montezuma to be closer to the ABC affiliate television station, KUPK-TV where our father worked as general manager the rest of his career.

Mom quickly made friends in the area joining many women's clubs, volunteering and was very active with the Montezuma Methodist Church, serving as the Sunday school program chair. She quickly bonded with close friends in the community, Gayle Fry and Willetta Ullom Payne.

In 1977, Mom began working at the McReynolds Insurance Agency that later became the Borth Agency where she became a state-licensed insurance agent.

In December 1986, Mom married Jack Borth and they made their home in Copeland, KS. They enjoyed traveling together and attended every auction they could find along the way. Both were avid antique collectors and there isn't an antique store in Kansas they haven't explored!

Mom welcomed two granddaughters, Darian and Alexis who were the light of her life. She loved spoiling them and passing along her love of many things, especially jewelry. Each granddaughter blessed her with a great grandson.

Mom lost Jack in November 2023 and has been under the wonderful, attentive care of Bethel Home, Montezuma since.

Mom leaves behind two daughters, Cindy Surber of Olathe and Becky Chapple (Todd) of Lawrence, three stepsons, Jeff Borth, Jim Borth, and Joel (fiancé Carolyn) all of Montezuma, two granddaughters, Darian Gonzales of Lawrence and Alexis Gonzales of Lawrence, and two grandsons, Ayden Dye of Lawrence and Armelo Colter of Lawrence, three step grandchildren, Meredith (Jace) Chapple of Lawrence, Brett Chapple of Kansas City, Missouri, Blake Chapple (Isa) and step-grandson, Levi Chapple, all of Camp Pendleton, California; step grandson, Taylor Weibener (Natalie); and step great granddaughter, Taylie Weibener all of Oklahoma.

A Visitation with the family will be held at Swaim Funeral Home, 506 W. Cortez, Montezuma, on Monday, September 7, 2026 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with family receiving friends from 5-7 PM. Graveside service will be held at the Copeland Cemetery on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 11:00 AM.
