Sublette - Betty L. Hammer, 82, died October 22, 2014 at the Satanta Long Term Care Unit. She was born on December 23, 1931 in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, the daughter of Carl and Effie (Sponsel) Hapes.
Betty was raised in Cheyenne Wells, attending the Catholic school until her senior year. She then went to Cheyenne Wells High School, graduating in 1949. On January 29, 1950, she married Robert "Bob" Hammer in Raton, New Mexico. He preceded her in death on October 29, 1999. They moved to Haskell County in 1956 from Cheyenne Wells. Betty helped Bob on the farm, doing whatever needed to be done. She enjoyed playing bridge and bowling.
She was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Satanta, the Alter Society, and the Women's Auxilary of the American Legion in Sublette.
Betty is survived by two daughters, LaVonne Hale and husband Henry of Satanta and Kim Hitchings of Texhoma, Oklahoma; one son, Chris Hammer and wife Ruth of Sublette; one brother, Carl "Butch" Hapes, Jr. of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband Bob, Betty is preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Donna Landers.
Vigil Service will be on Sunday, October 26 at 7:00 PM at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Satanta. Funeral Mass will be held at the church on Monday, October 27, 2014 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Jim Dieker presiding. Burial will follow at Haskell County Cemetery in Sublette. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Sublette on Sunday, October 26, 2014 from noon to 6 PM. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Satanta Long Term Care Unit in care of the funeral home.
