Dodge City - Betty Jane Herrman, 89, died January 19, 2019 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City. She was born on August 15, 1929 at Ensign, the daughter of Russell W. and Melissa A. (Phillips) Pegram.
On August 23, 1948 she married Lester James Herrman in Dodge City. He preceded her in death on November 5, 2002, after 54 years of marriage. Betty grew up in Ensign and lived there most of her adult life. Family was very important to her as was her community.
She volunteered for many years and was very involved in the Kansas Genealogical Society where she served as President, Corresponding Secretary, Executive Director and council member. Betty also published a book that she wrote in honor of her grandmother called "Lula's Story."
Betty moved from Ensign to Presbyterian Manor Apartments in 2013, where she made many wonderful friends.
She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City.
Betty is survived by two sons, Michael Kim Herrman and wife Pam of Wichita and Chris A. Herrman and wife Karen of Hays; one daughter, Lori A. Wade and husband Clyde of Dodge City; two brothers, Randy Pegram of Rogers, Arkansas and Harry Pegram of Ensign; eight grandchildren, Melissa Beckett, LeeAnna Gaspers, Marc Herrman, Troy Herrman, Tara Herrman, Tandy Lichter, Andrew Wade and Michael Wade; and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Russell J. (Bill) Pegram and one granddaughter, Chandra.
Vigil service will be at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Burial will follow at Ensign Cemetery in Ensign. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel in Dodge City on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from Noon to 5:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe or Sacred Heart School Endowment Fund both in care of the funeral home.
