Montezuma - Betty Mae Koehn, 83, was born to Ruth (Kunkle) Hotz on January 6, 1930 in Wichita. She was adopted by Dan P. and Hannah (Dirks) Koehn. She passed away on December 16, 2013 at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron.
She grew up in the Copeland-Montezuma area and received her education at Homestead and Montezuma schools. She was baptized on October 24, 1943 at the age of 13 by Rev. Ervin Harms in the North Mennonite Church. She was a charter member of Gospel Fellowship Church. She was the church historian for many years. On May 22, 1949, she married Robert Lee Koehn, sharing 64 years of marriage. He survives. They raised their family on a farm southwest of Montezuma. She was a homemaker and loved taking care of her children. Betty loved to quilt and put together many, many quilts, baby covers, and food carriers. Upon retirement, she and Robert moved into Montezuma and bought a Winnebago Motorhome and did extensive traveling, visiting their children, friends, and, National Parks. They would often spend time in the Phoenix area for the winter. In later life, she found her birth mother, three brothers, and one sister. She received much happiness by visiting them and they visiting her. Although her mother was suffering from Alzheimer's she was able to visit her several times before her death.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Robert Lee Koehn of Montezuma; two sons, Cecil Lynn Koehn and wife Karen of Fort Collins, Colorado and Robert (Bob) L. Koehn, Jr. and wife Kathy of Montezuma; two daughters, Diane Koehn and husband Willard of Flagstaff, Arizona and Debra Koehn and husband Richard of Montezuma; seven grandchildren, Joshua Koehn, Lisa Berg, Justin Koehn, Megan Benedict, Tyson Koehn, Amy Koehn and Sara Koehn; three great grandchildren Jesse Benedict, Gloria Louise Koehn, and Rylee Harper Berg, three brothers, John Hotz and wife Ann of Garden City, Don Hotz and wife Chris of Colombia, South Carolina and George Hotz of Miltonvale; and one sister, Anna Kingsley of Salina. She was preceded in death by her mother and adoptive parents; two brothers-in-law, Paul Dean Koehn and Earl Schneider; and four sisters-in-law, Corrine Koehn, Violet Schneider, Helen Smith, and Mae Marie Wedel.
Funeral service will be held at Gospel Fellowship Church in Montezuma on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 10:30 AM with Mr. Errol Koehn and Rev. Jerry Odle presiding. Burial will follow at Morningside Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Montezuma on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 from noon to 8:00 P.M.
