Scott City - Betty J. Land, 86, died March 4, 2025, at her daughter's home in Scott City. She was born on November 13, 1938 in San Patricio County Texas, the daughter of Clarence and Bessie (Brasher) Sorenson.
Betty spent her childhood in several towns across Texas, where she attended school and experienced a variety of local cultures. Throughout her life, she developed a deep love for cooking, baking, and bowling—passions she would carry with her for many years.
She lived in Denver City, Texas for many years, where she became an integral part of the community. Betty worked for the Oil Patch and Sellars Restaurant, where her warm personality and work ethic made her a beloved figure. In addition to her job at the local restaurants, Betty also served as a crossing guard at the local elementary school, ensuring the safety of children every school day. Her commitment to her community was unwavering, and her presence was felt by many.
Betty enjoyed a variety of hobbies, but her love for cooking and baking was especially strong. She was known for her delicious homemade meals and baked goods, often sharing them with neighbors and friends. When she wasn't in the kitchen, you could find Betty bowling, a favorite pastime she enjoyed with family and friends.
Betty is survived by four daughters, Debbie Barr and husband Steven of Scott City, Brenda Chambers and husband Chris of Georgetown, Texas, Shonda Childress of Gold Smith, Texas, and Betty Ann Dougherty and husband Jim of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one son, Ricky Madison of Andrews, Texas; 18 grandchildren; many great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and son, Terry Childress of Wolfforth, Texas.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, May 3rd, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Ratliff Funeral home in Denver City. There is no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials/Monetary donations are suggested to The Alzheimer's Foundation in care of Swaim Funeral Chapel – 1901 Sixth Ave – Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
