BILLY G. BELL
Protection - Billy G. Bell, 84, died January 29, 2015 at Protection Valley Manor, Protection , Kansas. He was born on December 28, 1930 at Wichita, Kansas, the son of Harry Oscar and Lena Bell.
Billy grew up in Wichita, being one of eleven children, spending his childhood and teenager years there. He served his country in Korea where he was wounded by a landmine, and spent many weeks in a hospital in Japan. He moved to Dodge City, Kansas, in 1961. He married Betty Lee Stevenson in 1964. She preceded him in death in 2002. In 2002, he married Julie Griffiths Howard. They moved to Protection, Kansas in 2004. He worked for Coca-Cola and for many years for Crain Chemicals of Texas. He later worked on a fund-raising board for Dodge City Community College, raising money for scholarships. Car racing was his passion. He drove race cars for many years until a serious injury from a crash. He went on to own two race cars. Dale Earnhardt was his hero.
He was a member of the American Legion, Dodge City, and was a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife, Julie Bell, SouthBourne, Dorset, England; son Billy A. Bell, Blue Springs, Missouri; daughters Karen Bellview, Lexington, Texas; Carol Cantue, San Antonio, Texas; Michelle Sprecker, Olathe, stepsons Stuart Howard, New Zealand; Martyn Howard, Protection, James Howard, England; twin brother Bobby Bell, Seattle, Washington; sisters, Aileen, Oregon; Betty Lou, Wichita, twenty grandchildren, and step-grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty Bell, four sisters, Hazel, Marie, Maryann, and Charlene, and three brothers Jack, Mickey, and Larry.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City with military rites conducted by Howard Gotschall Post # 1714, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dodge City, and the KSARNG Military Honors. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 3, 2015 from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to Shriner Childrens' Hospital, St. Jude Childrens' Research Hospital, or to Alzheimers' Research, in care of the funeral home.
