Casey W Leatherwood passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Trinity Manor, Dodge City. He was born on August 20, 1975 in Dodge City, to Carl and Michelle (McAdam) Leatherwood.
Casey was a lifelong resident of Cimarron and Dodge City. He graduated from Cimarron High School in 1996. After high school, he volunteered at the Shepherd's Center in Cimarron, until his retirement in 2018. He was recognized as the Cimarron Community Volunteer of the Year in 2002. He touched the lives of many residents and their families by helping Diane Sidebottom with activities, doing one on one visits, and helping with water pitchers and housekeeping. He was active in the North American Limousin Junior Association where he volunteered helping Patsy Edwards with the Mini-Junior program to provide the young children with fun activities at summer livestock shows.
Casey was a member of Dodge City Dodgers Special Olympics. He competed in basketball, track, swimming, golf, bowling, bocce and cornhole. Casey represented Kansas Special Olympics as a golfer at the National Special Olympics summer games in Des Moines, Iowa in 2006 and Lincoln, Nebraska in 2010. He was selected Most Inspirational Athlete at the Kansas Summer Games in 2006, and was inducted into the Kansas Special Olympics Hall of Fame in 2017. He always enjoyed cheering for his teammates and congratulating his competitors.
Casey enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He was a gentleman and a people person. If you met him once you were a forever friend. For many years he was the Easter Bunny's official stand-in at the annual Cimarron Easter Egg Hunt, and area nursing homes. He enjoyed attending Night to Shine with his friends. He loved to spend his summers water skiing, swimming, and working on his tan. He took great care and pride in caring for his flock of chickens, and giving eggs to his friends.
Casey is survived by his parents of Dodge City, his sister Lisa and brother-in-law Kelly of Chadron, Nebraska, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, Dodge City Dodgers teammates and coaches, and many, many friends. Casey was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leo and Frances Leatherwood and Eugene and Maxine McAdam; aunt, Jeannette McAdam; and special friend, Sarah Moote.
Funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City on Friday, June 27, 2025 at 10:00 AM with Father John Stang presiding. Burial will follow at Cimarron Cemetery in Cimarron. Visitation will be held at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City on Thursday, June 26, 2025 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. with the vigil service at 7:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Dodge City Special Olympics or Hospice of the Prairie in care of the funeral home. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
