IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Catherine "Cathy"
Kay Johnson
April 6, 1948 – January 22, 2022
Cimarron - Catherine Kay McDaniel Johnson was born at Freedom, Oklahoma on April 6, 1948 and passed away in Dodge City on January 22, 2022.
Cathy's childhood was spent both in several towns where her father served as a Methodist minister as well as on a farm west of Alva, Oklahoma. She graduated from Alva High School in 1966. She then went on to graduate with a Bachelors degree in music education from Northwestern Oklahoma State University and a Masters degree from Southwestern State Oklahoma University where she studied music education and organ performance.
Catherine Kay and Albert Wesley Johnson were married at the First Methodist Church in Alva, Oklahoma in 1967 and completed their educations. Cathy began her teaching career at Sharon-Mutual, Oklahoma in 1971 and also taught in Kansas at Montezuma, Hanston and Bucklin, teaching elementary, vocal and instrumental music. She retired in 2011.
Cathy's interests included giving piano lessons, directing the chancel and bell choirs of Cimarron United Methodist Church, and genealogy. She was church organist, was active in Daughters of the American Revolution and was a long-time member of the Dodge City Cowboy Band. Cathy was a believer that music enriched the lives of both performers and listeners. Cathy enjoyed golden retrievers, raising flowers and "discussing" politics with certain friends.
Cathy was preceded in death by her father Marion F. McDaniel, and her mother Idelle Taylor McDaniel. Cathy is survived by her husband of 54 years, Albert Wesley Johnson. She is also survived by her sisters Charlotte McAnally and husband Tom, and Carolyn Westcote and husband John, sister-in-law Jonna Shklar and husband Mike, and by several nieces and nephews and extended family.
