Obituary

Charles M. Deiterman

Charles Michael Deiterman ("Charlie" to his friends and "Chuck" to his family) passed away on November 2, 2025, at his home in Dodge City, KS, after a brief illness.

Charlie was born on March 22, 1950, to Arnold and Marlys (Williams) Deiterman, the oldest of four children. He grew up on the family farm near Ward, SD, and attended St. Mary's and Elkton Public Schools in Elkton, SD. Chuck graduated from Elkton High School in 1969. After graduation he joined a combine crew from Shattuck, OK, harvesting wheat from Texas to Montana and then heading back south again to harvest milo. He worked with the Shattuck crew for a decade before marrying Doris MacDougall. They lived near Hooker, OK, where Charlie worked in a cattle feed yard. He went on to live in Dodge City, KS, Elkton, SD, and Fort Worth, TX, while working construction and driving truck. In 2018 he moved back to Dodge City to stay with his good friend and Doris's cousin, Sharon Miller.

In his later years, Chuck enjoyed helping others with odd jobs and as a travel companion. He loved socializing and telling stories of his days on the road, often reminiscing about the places he had seen and the people he had met across the country. He spent plenty of nights in his truck in line at grain elevators in all kinds of weather and frequently recalled being snowed in during the Halloween 1991 blizzard at an elevator near Minneapolis, MN. Charlie was an excellent cook and made many meals at Sharon's house. He came to love herding Sharon's two cats and two dogs, making sure they had the best pet food and lavish attention. As a young man he began reading Western novels before bed, a practice he enjoyed until his last days. Chuck took great pleasure in calling friends and family on the phone, usually signing off with a reminder to tell everybody I said "hi"!

Charlie will lovingly be remembered by siblings, Lenard (Carol) Deiterman, Springdale, AR, and Nadene Deiterman (Keith) Greni, Rapid City, SD; several nieces and nephews, and his friend, Sharon Miller.

Chuck was preceded in death by his wife Doris (1983), his dad Arnold (2002), his mom Marlys (2005), his brother Jim (2025), and a niece Beth (1995).

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Swaim Funeral Chapel in Dodge City with Mr. Jeff Hiers presiding. Burial services at Elkton, SD, will be announced at a later date. There will be no visitation as cremation will take place. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Prairie in care of the funeral home. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
