Chau Akuang Thon, 45, passed away on February 13, 2026, at Trinity Manor in Dodge City, Kansas. He was born on January 1, 1981, in Abuodit, Bor County, Jonglei State, South Sudan, to Akuang Thon Ajak and Akur Kuereng Anyang.

Chau was known for his compassion, kindness, and generosity, and he was deeply loved by those around him. He enjoyed watching movies, listening to music, and following sports, and he had a fondness for animals. A man of strong faith, Chau demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout his life. Chau worked at various companies in Chicago, including Home Depot and Security Firms, and in Alaska, at Trident Seafoods and Seaboard. Most recently, he worked at Cargill in Dodge City, Kansas, where he left in 2024 due to health issues.

During Sudan's protracted civil war, Chau became one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. His journey began in 1987 when he first traveled to Ethiopia. In 1990, he was baptized in the Episcopal Church and given the baptismal name Peter. Following the Ethiopian government's change in 1991, the situation for South Sudanese refugees worsened, prompting Chau to return to Southern Sudan before relocating to Kenya in 1992. His long journey ultimately brought him to the United States in 2001, where he was resettled in Chicago. The story of the Lost Boys profoundly shaped his identity, and he often reflected on this experience. Chau was married to Achol Arok Lual Garang from Pathim, Adhiok section, and they are blessed with one son, Akuang.

He survived by his spouse, Achol Arok Lual Garang; his son, Akuang; his mother, Akur Kuereng Anyang; his brother, Mathung Akuang; and his nephews, nieces, uncles, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Akuang, his brothers, Ajak and Thon, and his sister, Ayen.

The graveside service for Chau Thon will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 11:00am at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City.
