Dodge City – Christen "Christy" Hornung, 80, died June 9, 2024 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on September 11, 1943 at Dodge City, Kansas the daughter of Charles and Veryle (Bailey) Wycoff.
She married Donald Hornung on June 18, 1965 in Dodge City, he survives. Mrs. Hornung was a Dodge City High School graduate and went on to further her education at St. Mary of The Plains College receiving a Bachelor's degree in education. She continued her studies at Kansas State University and received two Master Degrees in special education from Kansas State University. Christy worked as a special education teacher and also as the Gifted Administrator for several school districts in the area. She was an honorary Angel Flight Member while attending Washburn University. Christy was the teacher of Special Education for the Dodge City Middle School for the last several years of teaching before retiring. She received Teacher of the Year Award early on in her career, and received many other teaching accolades over the years as well She was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother and always put her family first. Christy was a care giver to any animal that was fortunate to have crossed paths with her. She was also a very caring and compassionate woman helping anyone who was in need and was very generous to many organizations in Dodge City and surrounding communities. She served on the Board of Directors at CrustBuster Speed King. Christy loved many different activities from going to the farm with her husband Don, to taking care of her garden, playing card, and bird watching in her spare time.
She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City and the Delta Gamma Sorority at Washburn University.
She is survived by her husband Don of the home; two sons Christian Hornung of Dodge City and Matthew Hornung and wife Viktoria of Dodge City. She is also survived by her granddaughter Nikita Hornung and one niece KaCee Richards and husband Chris, and daughter Charlotte of Offerle, Kansas as well as several nieces and nephews and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister ChaRee Smith, Brother-in-law Doug Smith and daughter-in-law Johna Hornung.
Funeral Mass will be held at Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Friday June 21, 2024 at 10:30 AM with Rev. John Stang presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Thursday, June 20, 2024 from 12:00- 5:00 PM. Vigil service will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 7:00 PM at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
