Montezuma - Clayton Ferguson, 90, died October 24, 2018 at Bethel Home in Montezuma. He was born on December 15, 1927 at his grandparents farm in Gray County, the son of Stephen Leroy "Roy" and Alice Gertrude (Anton) Ferguson.
Clayton was a lifetime resident of Gray County. He was the valedictorian of Montezuma High School class of 1945. Clayton began his college career at Kansas State University. He attended one year before enlisting in the United States Army in the fall of 1946, where he served in the Pacific Theatre. After his discharge, Clayton joined the Army Air Force Reserve. He returned home to Montezuma and then went back to KSU to finish his degree. Clayton graduated, with honors, with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
Clayton met the love of his life, Dena Barger, on a blind date. They were married on June 4, 1951. After their marriage, they moved briefly to California before returning to Montezuma. Clayton worked for Ferguson Farm Supply and farmed with his father. He later sold televisions and electronics before going to work at Farmland Industry until his retirement in 1992. In 1992, Clayton was awarded a patent that was used in reformers. Clayton's hobbies included being a licensed ham radio operator and well as having a private pilot's license.
He was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church where he taught the high school Sunday school class for over 20 years.
Clayton is survived by a son Marc Ferguson and wife Alice of Montezuma; and two grandchildren, Chip Ferguson and Melissa Ferguson both of Montezuma. He is preceded in death by his wife Dena; a daughter, Janet Ferguson; and a sister, Gloria Nelson.
Graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma on Monday October 29, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Jerry Odle presiding. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Montezuma on Sunday October 28, 2018 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.
