She attended school in Springfield but would travel by herself on the Greyhound bus to Dodge City to visit her dad, stepmother, and brothers.

Courtney graduated from high school in 1954 at the age of 19. She attended nursing school at Springfield Memorial Hospital and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1957. She then moved to Chicago and studied pediatrics and psychiatry. Courtney had an adventurous spirit. He career as a nurse took her to LaGuna Beach, California where she worked at the South Laguna Beach Hospital and lived across the street for 10 years. During these years she had married and divorced twice. She then moved to Fort Mojave, Arizona with her best friend Jackie and lived near the Colorado River. She worked as the Nurse Supervisor at the Humana Hospital for several years.

Jackie and Courtney took many cross-country road trips in their RV. Some of the places they visited were Utah, Santa Fe, Maine, Vermont, Louisiana, and Oregon. Courtney would take time off from nursing and would go back to it when she got restless. She continued in many areas of nursing until she was 77 years young.

Courtney joined the catholic faith in the year 2000 in Needles, California at St. Ann's Catholic Church. She participated in a Bible Study Group with her friend Susan; even continuing long distance after moving back to Dodge City in 2015. She always said that moving back home with her brothers was the best time of her life. She had a caring, young heart and loved everyone. Her joy in life was being a nurse and spending time with her family. She made many friends through her career and adventures and at Park Plaza where she lived.
