Danny Lee Schmidt, 72, died March 30, 2021 at Trinity Manor in Dodge City. He was born on December 17, 1948 at Dodge City, the son of Darrel C. and Vera Pauline (King) Schmidt.
Danny grew up on the family farm, six miles northwest of Copeland. He graduated from Copeland High School in 1967, where he loved to run hurdles in track. In 1968, Danny joined the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country for the next four years. Danny was stationed in Texas for one year and then England for three years where he served as an airplane mechanic. After he was honorably discharged, Danny returned to southwest Kansas. He began his work career by helping to start a travel agency in Garden City. After a few years, Danny opened his own travel agency in Dodge City. Danny then moved to Dallas where he worked in the airline industry for a number of years. Later, he had several sales jobs including clothing sales, advertising, and ticket sales. Danny was a talented musician as well, playing the guitar and was even involved in a band in high school. He enjoyed camping, water skiing, and was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan.
Danny is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Schmidt of Hays; a brother, Ronnie Schmidt and wife Barbara of Copeland; three nieces, Andrea Downey and husband Eric of Louisville, Kentucky, Sarah Atzbach and husband Aaron of Dodge City; and Katie Schmidt of Copeland; and three great nephews, James and Logan Downey and Liam Atzbach. He is preceded in death by his parents and a great niece, Cassandra Downey.
Graveside service will be held at Copeland Cemetery on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 2:00 PM with Mr. Doug Harris presiding and military honors by the McConnell Air Force Honor Guard and the American Legion 8 th District Honor Guard. Cremation has taken place. A book signing will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Sublette on Friday, April 16, 2021 from noon to 6:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Soldiers Home Activity Fund in care of the funeral home. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
