DARLENE L. HORNBAKER
CIMARRON-
Darlene Lucille Hornbaker, 73, died Monday, January 26, 2009 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains at Dodge City, KS. She was born on November 26, 1935 on a farm about 6 miles northwest of Ensign, the daughter of Guy Robert and Zella Mae (Prescott) Salem.
She attended grade school not very far from her home at the Diamond Country School until the fourth grade and then finished her schooling at Ensign and was graduated from Ensign High School in 1953. She married Duane Hornbaker on July 26, 1957, in Liberal, Kansas. In November of this same year, they moved to Howell, Kansas, where they managed the Howell Elevator. They retired from this job in May of 2001. After this time, Darlene worked as a paraprofessional at the Cimarron Grade School where she was loved and praised by all the children and staff. Darlene was also a lifetime member of the Dodge City Moose and was always baking cakes and pies and fixing food for all of their many events. She earned the College of Regents Degree in the Moose. Darlene was a very caring wife and homemaker, a wonderful person with a heart of gold- always there to help others. She was like a grandmother to the children at Cimarron Grade School. Over the years she listened to thousands of stories read by the children. Darlene loved helping the children.
Survivors include husband Duane Hornbaker of Cimarron; one daughter,Tami Holton and friend Frank Holton, Rogers, Ark; one grandaughter, Tara Lajiness and husband Ken of Kansas City, Kansas; two great grandchildren, Alexis Helt and Kevin White, both of Rogers, Ark; one sister, Delores Bunnell and husband Harry of Copeland; two brothers, Bob Salem and wife Betty of Oberlin; Virgil Salem and wife Judy, of Cimarron; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Bill Salem.
Funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, January 30, 2009 at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with Rev. Randall S. Harrell presiding. Burial will follow at Cimarron Cemetery, Cimarron. Visitation will be noon til 8:00 P.M. Thursday, January 29, at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be donated to the Cimarron Elementary School in care of Swaim Funeral Home, 1901 6th Avenue, Dodge City, Kansas. 67801.
