Obituary

Greensburg - David Lynn Unruh was born on April 22, 1952, to Calvin and Jennie Jantz Unruh in Greensburg, Kansas. He unexpectedly went to heaven at the age of 68 in a tragic vehicle accident on the way home from a niece's wedding.

David's boyhood years were spent in Greensburg. He received his education from the local schools. His parents remember David as a child who did not do anything extraordinary. He was dependable, and whatever he did was done well and quietly. David gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, by Minister Lincoln Jantz on April 24, 1966. He was faithful to his vows until the end, leaving us with no questions of his salvation. Church attendance was important to him; when the doors were open, we were there.

During his youth years, David spent a couple of summers moving dirt in the Copeland, Kansas, area. At that time, he drove a Plymouth Duster and acquired the nickname Duster Dave. David and I, Elaine Hiebert, met at a wedding and fell in love. We were married April 25, 1976. This April would have been our 45th anniversary. We enjoyed a good marriage. God blessed us with four healthy children.

David was a farmer. He had other sideline jobs, including being a handyman. He also enjoyed doing carpentry work. We have been janitors at church for more than 30 years. On snowy or icy days, he was out cleaning off sidewalks, even before he knew if there would be church. We as children remember dad as a patient, loving father who was always interested in us. Since Dad was a farmer, we were able to spend a lot of time with him: at home, riding tractor, and doing other farm errands. Before any of us were married, we spent several consecutive summers in Colorado, tent camping and sightseeing. These trips were Dad's highlight and joy; he just beamed when he talked about them.

Dad enjoyed relation and was also interested in other people's genealogy. We seldom missed a family reunion. Dad was so enthused about becoming a grandpa in 2012 when both Kyron and Trevyn were born. He smiled broadly at the arrival of each new grandson. Randall, Dustin, Kenyon, Colby, and Trentyn completed the roll call. He enjoyed his grandsons and spent many happy hours reading to them and playing games with them. This last Christmas was a bit hectic with three babies under a year. Dad was so delighted to help hold and entertain them. He also loved his children-in-law, making each one feel like one of the family.

Dad loved to travel. He enjoyed visiting other congregations and seeing new churches. Often he would drive off of his route just to see a new church in another congregation. He delighted in taking new routes and seeing different scenery. His last days were spent doing what he loved. Dad loved music, often asking his girls, "Do we have time to do some singing tonight?" One song he picked often was "My Jesus Has Broad Shoulders." If there was opportunity to sing in a group song, he was a ready volunteer. We imagine him in heaven, adding his bass to the choir.

Those left to cherish fond memories are his wife Elaine, of Greensburg; four children: Carol and Jonathan Schmidt of Versailles, Missouri; Lyndon and Denise Unruh of Greensburg; Wayne Unruh of Greensburg; and Jewel and Dewey Dirks of Rich Hill, Missouri; his parents Calvin and Jennie Unruh of Greensburg, (currently living in Bethel Home in Montezuma); one brother Stan and Cathy Unruh of Ozawakie; one sister Jolene and Jerrold Unruh of Burns; two brothers-in-law: Ray and Phyllis Hiebert of Pecos, Texas; Allen and Vi Hiebert of Ottawa; seven grandsons; numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins, and a multitude of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents-in-law Paul and Lucille Hiebert and his brother-in-law Jerry Hiebert.
