MONTEZUMA - Delores Hitz, 91, died August 4, 2014 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. She was born on December 19, 1922 in Montezuma, the daughter of Lincoln and Rena (Wade) Koehn of Dodge City.
As a young child, Delores lived in Dodge City with her family. She was an avid roller skater and taught lessons during high school. She graduated from Dodge City High School in 1940. Delores married Chester Karnes. He preceded her in death. In 1949, she married Vernon Hitz in Dodge City. Delores and Vernon moved to Montezuma to the family farm. She worked as a laboratory technician for Dodge City Medical Center and was a farm wife. Vernon preceded her in death on August 6, 1990. In 2009, Delores moved to Garden City and was a resident at the Homestead Assisted Living. She was also one who loved to paint and travel with friends.
She was an active member of the Morningside Church of Montezuma, giving of her personal time for the good of others.
Delores is survived by three sons, Bill Karnes and wife Ginny of Wilmington, Delaware, Bob Hitz and wife Melinda of Garden City, and Dennis Hitz of Abilene ; one daughter, Betzi Hitz of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and seven grandchildren, Mick Hitz and wife Andie of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Iris Willow of San Fancisco, California, Kristen Hitz of Lubbock, Texas, Ben Hitz of Lawrence, Jack Hitz of Lawrence, Marley Hitz of Manhattan, and Kaden Hitz of Abilene. She is also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Keith Koehn.
Funeral service will be held at Morningside Church in Montezuma on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. with Pastor Tim Erickson presiding. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Montezuma on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 from noon to 8:00 P.M.. Memorials are suggested to Morningside Community Church in care of the funeral home.
