Dodge City - Dennis Leon "Doc" Netherton, 84, died May 26, 2021 at Trinity Manor Nursing Home, Dodge City. He was born on September 18, 1936 at Dodge City, the son of Harley G. and Mary Elizabeth (Warren) Netherton.
Doc grew up in Chicago and went to work at Wisconsin Steel in Chicago when he was only 13 years old. He worked there for almost 20 years before they closed the plant. Doc took everything he had at the time and placed some wagers on sporting events where he made enough to buy a small farm near Chicago. Dennis later moved to Kansas and lived on a farm near Ensign. He worked at Cargill/Excel for many years and also served on the Excel Board. Doc was instrumental in the forming of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in Dodge City where he served as vice president.
He was a member of the UCFW Union in Dodge City and the Carter Country Pool League for many years.
Doc is survived by a niece, Melissa Perez of Chicago; great great nieces and nephews, Alex Carter of Enid, Oklahoma, Kyle Carter of Little Rock, Arkansas, Marshall Carter of Harrisonville, Missouri and David Carter of Enid, Oklahoma; several great great nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Claude, LeRoy, George, and John; and a niece, Tammy Carter.
Graveside service will be held at the Ensign Cemetery on Saturday May 29, 2021 at 11:00 AM. Book signing from Noon to 5:00 PM on Friday, May 28, 2021 at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.
