Obituary

Dick W. Stevens, 80, died Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney. He was born on December 14, 1928 in Lincoln, the son of J. Rex and Alice (Goodykoontz) Stevens.

Dick graduated from Lincoln High in 1946. He then attended Kansas State University. Mr. Stevens graduated from the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin in 1960. On June 3, 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, JoAnn Nelson. She survives. Dick was a longtime Kansas banker in Lincoln, Beverly, Goodland, WaKeeney, Garden City, and Oswego as well as Center, Nebraska. He was involved in the banking industry for over 50 years.

Growing up in a farming family, Dick enjoyed being a cowboy his whole life. In his youth, he also enjoyed athletics, including basketball and track, where he was a state champion. His other interests included being a pilot, hunting, fishing, and golf. He had a love for music and for watching his grandchildren's athletic activities.

He was a member of United Methodist Church of Cimarron, the Masonic Lodge, and the Shriners. He was a community leader and small town advocate.

In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by one son, Mike Stevens and wife Risa of Copeland; two daughters, Deanna Myers and husband Charles of Sublette and Nancy Riggin and husband Jack of Burdick; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jay Stevens, and one sister, Dorothy Cline.

Memorial service will be held at Cimarron United Methodist Church on Monday, July 6, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Kent Little presiding. There will be no public visitation as cremation has taken place. Burial will be Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. with Tom Webb presiding at the Lincoln City Cemetery in Lincoln, Kansas.
