IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald "Don"
L. Hahn
October 14, 1927 – December 24, 2022
Dodge City - Donald "Don" L. Hahn, 95, died December 24, 2022 at Brookdale House in Dodge City, Kansas. He was born on October 14, 1927. He loved to tell people that his honorary marker was the fire hydrant on Wyatt Earp between Nobilitea and Long John Silver's because that was where the Mid-wife's house where he was delivered was located on West Chestnut. He was the oldest son of Charles and Belle (Peterson) Hahn.
He was a lifetime resident of Dodge City. He attended school at Richland Valley. He graduated from Dodge City High School and Dodge City Community College. He was drafted into the Army at the age of 18 and went to serve in World War II. He achieved the rank of Corporal and returned to Dodge City. He was very proud of all his cousins and the many men and women who served our country.
When he returned to Dodge City, he went back to work at the Dodge City Post Office. He moved up through the ranks and became the 18 th Postmaster in 1976. He was the first Postmaster in Dodge City to not have been appointed due to political party affiliation. The original post office was established at Fort Dodge in 1865 and was changed to Dodge City in 1872. He loved that office and had several stories to tell. He served at the office in Dodge City for 49 ½ years. He hired a lot of people and bragged that they never lost a single bill, they all got delivered! He was not very fond of email and was always glad to get something in his mailbox with a stamp on it!
He married Vaneita June West on August 20 th , 1950. He met her while driving his sister Doris and her friends to a school camp. They were married almost seventy years. Their children were Rick, Kathy, and Chris. He was very proud of them and their accomplishments. He followed them to all their school, sporting, and music events as a parent and as parent sponsors. He provided rides to cheerleaders on their way to football and basketball games as well as attending Band trips to Bowl games and helped with fund raising for each activity. He then progressed to being the grandparent who supported those events and now the great-grandparent.
Other activities that he was involved in included Lions club, The Civil Air patrol, and delivering Meals on Wheels. In Lions club he loved helping line up the parades for Dodge City Days and serving Pancakes at the annual Pancake feeds during the Tournament of Champions contests. The more people the better!!! His flying was always a passion, and he spent many weekends at the airport. Delivering meals on wheels was a challenge because he would visit a little long with each stop and was often scolded for being late by some of the patrons waiting for their lunches.
He is survived by his daughter Kathy Frederking and husband Hal of Dodge City, his son Chris and wife Denise of Olathe; 8 Grandchildren, Seth Hahn, Cory Hahn, Jerrod Frederking, Joel Frederking, Emileigh Frederking, Jorgen Hahn, Lorean Hahn, and Reagan Hahn; 7 great grandchildren, Chad Frederking, Caylee Frederking, Camden Frederking, Miriam Hahn, Jakob Hahn, Tolsen Hahn, and Myah Frederking. His sister Fern Ricker, His sister-in-law Kay Hahn, and numerous wonderful nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Doris Stanek, his brother Danny Hahn, his wife, numerous sister-in-law and brother-in-law, and his son Rick Hahn.
