Obituary

Donald M. Weece, 87, died December 21, 2016 at his home in Dodge City. He was born December 2, 1929, in Cimarron, Kansas the son of Leonard and Mae (Gardiner) Weece.

Don grew up in Cimarron where he graduated from Cimarron High School and was very active in sports.
After High School he served his country by enlisting in the Army. Much of his military career was spent in Japan. He was very faithful in teaching a Bible study on base. After transferring back to Colorado he met Jean Taylor and they were married in 1954. The joy and challenges of that union produced five children; Michael Weece and wife Cindy of Lawrence, Kansas, Kay Seacat and husband Roger of Dodge City, Mark Weece and wife Mary of Sanford, Florida, Randy Weece and wife Suzanne of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and David Weece of Dodge City. His beloved wife, Jean, preceded him in death on February 19, 2014. Grandchildren are Branddon Weece, Kristin Thomas, Danielle Artzer, Shelly Sloan, Tracy Salzman, Heidi Rosario, Erik Weece, Stephanie Weece, Audrey Weece, and Erin Hartley. There are also 11 great grandchildren. Don is also survived by brothers Leon Weece, Miami Ok, Gene Weece, Unionville Mo, sisters Elsie Moore, Wake Village TX, Helen Weece, Wake Village TX, and Rose Wilkinson, Webb City Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Louise Tate, Linda Weece, and one brother Roy Weece.

Don Weece was a name that was synonymous with the furniture industry in Southwest Kansas. Many will remember his auction and furniture company which was started in 1957. With hard work, he started Rent-Buy long before the days of rental stores. For many years he built up Furniture Outlet before his last endeavor, the Dodge City Ashley Homestore. All of his children have been involved in the family business at some point since he opened.

Don was a member of First Christian Church where he was very active in teaching the Happy Partner Sunday School class until his passing.

Funeral service will be held at First Christian Church, Dodge City, Kansas on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. with Mr. Leon Weece and Mr. Gene Weece presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will at Swaim Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 from noon until 8:00 P.M. Family will be receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Memorials are suggested to Ozark Christian College or Cookson Hills Christian Children's Home in care of the funeral home.
