Dora Bishop, 95, died Saturday, February 28, 2009 at her son's residence in Dodge City. She was born on November 23, 1913 in Haskell County, KS, the daughter of Jonathan Orlando and Hetta Rebecca (Thornburg) Alexander.
Dora completed High School at Garden City, Kansas. Next in her educational process was completion of Normal School at Elkhart, Kansas. She later attended Fort Hays State University and obtained her teaching certificate. She taught in a one-room school known as East Banner. Dora married Hugh Bishop on May 12, 1936 in Ulysses. Hugh worked for Dora's brother, Arthur Alexander. Upon completion of harvest, the young couple moved to Anderson, Indiana, where they enrolled in Anderson University and Hugh pursued a theology degree.
There were five children born to this union: Ralph Wayne, Clyde Alvin, Vera Mae, Carl Hugh, and Mary Margaret. Clyde, Vera, and Carl died in infancy. Dora served as Hugh's helpmate and was a dedicated pastor's wife as they served Church of God congregations in Illinois, Iowa, Colorado, North Dakota, and Nebraska. They returned to Kansas in 1972 when Hugh accepted the pastorate of the United Methodist Church in Moscow, Kansas. Whenever they were serving, Dora was active in the local community and served in leadership postions in State and local church related organizations.
Dora's husband, Hugh Bishop, preceded her in death on February 10, 1982. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. Dora's crochet work is displayed in many homes across the United States and in foreign countries. She will be espically remembered for the name doilies she loved to create. Dora was faithful to her Lord, Jesus Christ, in her everyday living and leaves a Christian legacy to her family and all who loved and respected her.
She is survived by her son, Ralph and wife Carol Bishop of Dodge City; her daughter, Mary Talley and husband Don of Meridian, Mississippi; one sister, Melinda Allen of White Water; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren
Funeral service will be held at First Church of God, Dodge City, on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Darrell Hendrikson presiding. Burial will be at 3:00 PM Tuesday , March 3, 2009 at Liberal Cemetery in Liberal, KS. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home. Dodge City, on Monday, March 2, 2009 from noon to 8:00 PM.
