Doris Evelyn Birney,86, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026, at the Shepherd's Center in Cimarron with her daughters by her side. She was born on April 21, 1940, in Dodge City, the only daughter of Ben and Dorothy (Wade) Feuers.
Her childhood was spent in Copeland. Doris graduated from Copeland High School in 1958. She then attended Business College in Denver. On June 7, 1969, She was united in marriage to Larry Birney in Copeland, a union that brought her immense happiness and companionship.
The couple made their home in Sublette. Doris was a proud mother who devoted her life to raising her three daughters: Thaendra, Jo, and Teresa. Her love for her family was unwavering, and she took great joy in nurturing them and creating a warm home filled with cherished memories.
Doris's passion for baking was matched only by her love for family gatherings, where her exquisite cakes often became the centerpiece of joyful celebrations including weddings and birthdays. Her warmth and kindness will be deeply missed by those who knew her.
She is survived by her daughters, Thaendra Christenson of Nashville, Tennessee, Jo Birney of Colby, and Teresa Atwood and husband Chris of Goodland; four grandchildren, Kayla Birney of Denver, Colorado, Michael Birney of Colby, Rachel Montoya of Denver, and Adrian Birney (Kalli) of Colby; and three great grandchildren, Nataly, Aria, and Jordan, who will honor her legacy of love and creativity. She is preceded in death by her husband, Larry; her parents; and a brother, Richard Feuers.
A graveside service will be held at Copeland Cemetery on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM with Pastor Doug Harris presiding. Visitation will take place at Swaim Funeral Chapel in Cimarron on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Noah's Ark Animal Shelter located in Colby in care of the funeral home. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guestbook at www.swaimfuneralhome.com
