Dorothy May Adams Hamby, our mother, grandmother, great grandmother & aunt, passed away on March 31, 2011 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City. She was born to Samuel and Alena (Barker) Adams on September 29, 1923 in McLouth, Kansas.
At a young age, she and her family moved to Elkhart, Kansas. After graduation from Elkhart, Kansas high school she moved to Liberal, Kansas. It was there she met her husband, Robert Hamby. During WWII, she returned to Elkhart while Robert served as a medic in General Patton's Army. To this union she bore three children, Carol, Donald and Ronald. After the war, the family moved to Dodge City, Kansas where she remained until her death.
For many years Dorothy worked at Ford County Treasurers Office. She enjoyed her employment there and her colleagues became friends. Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dodge City.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Dr. Carol Hamby (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma), Ronald Hamby and his wife Janie (Wichita, Kansas), and daughter-in-law Linda Hamby (Wichita, Kansas); grandchildren Chris Stanley (Benton, Kansas), Drs. Eric and Christine Hamby, their children Nicholas, Nolan and Ella (Webster, New York), Dr. David Hamby and his wife Jennifer, and daughter Emily (Andover, Massachusetts), Lance Hamby (Bellevue, Washington), Ashley Hamby Money and husband Graham (Wichita, Kansas), Monica Baker (Wichita, Kansas), and Randy Elkins (Wichita, Kansas); nephew Don Moore and wife Sharon (Atlanta, Georgia).
Mrs. Hamby was preceded in deathy by her parents, Samuel and Alena Adams; sisters, Wilma and Florence; brothers Glenn, James and Ralph; husband Robert; son Donald, and granddaughter Jill.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City with Rev. Adelia Hooley presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Public visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Swaim Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association or the First United Methodist Church of Dodge City.
