Dr. Michael Shane Hanna, 72, of Oakland, NE, passed away on July 8, 2026. He was born on April 1, 1954, in Dodge City, KS, the son of Vernon and Emma (Shepard) Hanna.

Mike was raised in Cimarron, KS, and developed a fondness for animals and farm life. During high school, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, reflecting the dedication and strong character that would define him. Mike graduated high school in 1972 and attended Garden City Community College, where he earned an associate’s degree. He then moved to Lawrence, KS, to work at Heck Hereford Farm before pursuing a passion for horses by attending farrier school in 1977. After completing farrier school, he worked alongside his father until 1981 and later served with Gray County from 1982 to 1986. Committed to furthering his education, he returned to school at Dodge City Community College before continuing to Kansas State University. In May 1994, he fulfilled his lifelong dream by graduating from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine and began his career as a veterinarian. Throughout his veterinary career, he worked in research, cared for both large and small animals in veterinary practice, and served with the USDA.

Mike had a strong devotion to animals and cared for many favorite pets throughout his lifetime. A dedicated and loyal Wildcat fan, he loved all things K-State and proudly wore the color purple to cheer on his team. He treasured time with his family and especially loved visiting with his children and watching his grandchildren participate in their many activities. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, gunsmithing, and coin collecting.

Mike is survived by his three children, Abby Judkins of Phoenix, AZ; Heidi Johnson and husband Jordan of Tekamah, NE; Aubrie Hanna of Kearney, NE; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Rebecca Daniels and husband Joel of El Dorado, KS and Lynette Owens and husband Brian of Cimarron, KS; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Cody Hanna of Phoenix, AZ, and his parents.

Memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at the Cimarron Christian Church with Pastor Kyle Lawson presiding.  There is no visitation as cremation has taken place.  Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guestbook at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
