Obituary

Dodge City - Robert Duane Askew, 78, died September 20, 2021 at Brookdale Senior Living in Dodge City.  He was born on May 17, 1943 in Dodge City, the son of John and Jessie Mae (Smith) Askew.

Duane grew up in Dodge City, graduating from Dodge City High School. After high school, Duane began farming. While farming, he also worked part time for McKinley Winter Livestock and was also a rural route mail carrier. On October 28, 1967, Duane married Janice Herman in Spearville, together they had three children; John, L'Chelle, and Mike.

Duane was a family man. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was also an avid K-State fan. Duane loved sports, watching and playing; pitching for his high school baseball team and playing as a guard in basketball. He also spent time coaching little league, as well as tried out for the Pittsburg Pirates. He also served on the FSA board. Another thing Duane enjoyed was traveling and learning his family history. He was honored to combine the two and take his family to Europe to Kirkby Lonsdale where his great great great grandfather was buried. In his younger days, Duane was happy to sit and enjoy a beer with his friends and family; and in his older days he enjoyed spending time with them with a treat at Dairy Queen.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Askew of Dodge City; children, John Askew and wife Sherry of Dodge City, L'Chelle Johnson and husband Jamie of Wamego, and Mike Askew and fiancé Wendi Foster of Wamego; 10 grandchildren, Samantha Rumbaugh and husband Tanner, Robert Askew and wife Kelly, Rachel Askew, Devin Askew, Averi Foster, Jaran Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Jace Johnson, Jaden Johnson, and Krista Scott; two great grandchildren, Emery Rumbaugh and Cayson Rumbaugh; brother, Dennis Askew of Frisco, Texas; nephew, Dennis Askew Jr.; niece, Melissa Askew; and 2 great nieces and nephews. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jessie Mae Askew; and a first cousin raised with him, Barbara Ann (Nash) Melvin.
