Obituary
Dodge City - Earl Carlson, 98, died May 27, 2014, from Dodge City, Kansas. He was born on a farm in rural Saline County, near Smolan, Kansas, on April 15, 1916, to Rudolph and Hildur (Nelson) Carlson. He was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Salemsborg Lutheran Church at Smolan. He married Velma Bever on October 13, 1940; she passed away on December 22, 2007.
After graduating from Smolan High School, Earl moved to Wichita attended Wichita Business College, and worked for Wichita Building Material from 1936 to 1952. He served in the Merchant Marines from January 1943 until the end of World War II. Wichita Building Material transferred him to Dodge City in February 1946. In 1952 he opened Carlson Paint Store, which he owned and operated until 1976. After retiring Earl picked up a paint brush and painted houses and businesses for the next 34 years until the age of 94. Earl never met a stranger. He was liked and respected by all who knew him, both family and friends.
Earl served his church, Christ The King Lutheran Church, as Council Chairman for two terms and in various other capacities. He was a board member of the Trinity Hospital Association for 18 years and on the Dodge Township board for about 30 years.
He is survived by two daughters, Janis Reichenborn and husband Danny and Lois Teegardin and husband Gary all of Dodge City. He is also survived by one granddaughter Heidi Mead and husband Eric of Phoenix, AZ; three grandsons Matthew Reichenborn of San Jose, CA; Colby Teegardin and wife Betsy of Emporia, KS; and Troy Teegardin of Wichita, KS; and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister Martha Ann Stensgard of Woodbury, MN.
He was preceded in death by his wife Velma, three brothers; Roy, Virgil, and August, and one sister Doris.
Funeral service will be held at Christ The King Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Jeff Turner presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Friday, May 30, 2014 from 12:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Christ The King Lutheran Church or Lutheran World Relief in care of the funeral home.
