Dodge City - Edith Bernice Black, 91, died September 2, 2014 at her home in Dodge City. She was born on April 6, 1923 at Cimarron, the daughter of Floyd Gilmore and Frances Viola (Kimball) Carrier.
She grew up on a farm south of Kalvesta in Gray County. On July 4, 1939, she married Ivan Glen Gergen at Cherryvale, Kansas. They divorced in later years. She married Charles Black on March 6, 1961 at Buffalo, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on May 16, 1982. She and Charles lived for over twenty years in Larned, Kansas, where she was employed with Larned State Hospital for seven years in the kitchen. Together they attended the Christian Church there. She moved to Dodge City in June of 1992.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol Jackson and husband Wayne, Dodge City, and Gayle Byer, St. John, Kansas; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews including Gary Carrier and Susan Reardon, both of Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles Black, two daughters, Marlene Barrand and Glenna Dean Gergen, four brothers and four sisters.
Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Friday, September 5, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City on Thursday, September 4, 2014 from 12:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
