Obituary
Montezuma - Edwin Denton Jacques, Jr., 91, died November 14, 2012 at Meade District Hospital in Meade. He was born on the family farm on June 16, 1921 near Ensign, the son of Edwin Denton and Maude (Butcher) Jacques, Sr.
Edwin graduated from Montezuma High School in 1938. On April 16, 1939, he married Bessie "Opal" Latta in Meade. She preceded him in death on March 24, 1997. They lived south of Haggard on the farm where they raised their family. Edwin moved to Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City and then later to Bethel Home in Montezuma. Mr. Jacques was a decorated World War II veteran, serving in the army and obtaining the rank of T4. After retiring from farming, Edwin worked at Unruh Foster in Montezuma as a mechanic. He loved to travel with his last trip being to Washington D.C. on the Kansas Honor Flight in July of 2012.
He was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church and the Montezuma Lions Club. He served on Gray County Soil Conservation District Board as well as the Dodge City Cooperative Board.
Mr. Jacques is survived by a son, Edwin Denton (Kim) Jacques, III and wife Debra of Sublette; a granddaughter, Shannon Moore and husband Doug of Montezuma; three grandsons, Scott Glassco and wife Natalie of Montezuma, Jeff Jacques and wife Nicole of Marion, Iowa; and Jon Jacques and wife Amie of Chickasha, Oklahoma; a brother, Bill Jacques and wife Althea of Minneola; a sister Donna Faye Harden and husband Bob of Minneola; a sister in law, Shirley Jacques of Salina; seven great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. In addition to his wife, Opal, Edwin is preceded in death by his parents; daughter and son-in-law, Francis and J.B. Glassco; one brother, Robert Jacques; and one sister, Doris Henderson.
Funeral service will be held at Montezuma United Methodist Church on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Jerry Odle presiding. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Montezuma on Sunday, November 18, 2012 from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to World War II Honor Flight in care of the funeral home.
