Obituary

Eleanor Bell (Hull) Laughead, 98, of Dodge City, died May 23, 2018 at Brandon Woods, Lawrence.

She was born September 16, 1919, in Loveland, Colorado, to Raleigh W. and Julia (Connor) Hull. She graduated from Loveland High School in 1938. She was Queen of Loveland's Pioneer Celebration and Queen of Larimer County, Colorado Rodeo, both in 1939. She married George Laughead on Oct. 20, 1940, in Loveland, Colorado. They lived in Dodge City.

Mr. Laughead enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 , and graduated from officers candidate school. He served in the European theater in France, and was discharged in 1946 as a captain. She lived in Loveland, Colorado during the war and worked as secretary to the Commandant at a POW Camp for German prisoners in Greeley, Colorado.

He returned to work for his father's business as a partner, retiring in 1990. He died in 2005. She enjoyed traveling, dancing and music. Her bridge playing was famous. She was a 75 year member of the P.E.O., life member of the Ford County Historical Society, and served in many positions at the First Presbyterian Church, all of Dodge City.

She is survived by a son, George Laughead, Jr. of Lawrence; a daughter, Julia Feld and husband Andrew, of Morrison, Colorado.; four grandchildren; Josh (Michelle) Benedict, New Mexico, Mandy Benedict, Avon, Colorado, Lauren (Billy) Macaulay, Winchester, Massachusetts, and Jonathan Laughead, Needham, Massachusetts, and two great-grandchildren, Della and Noah; and a niece, Lee (Catherine) Varra-Nelson, of Ft Collins, Colorado. She was preceded in death by a brother, Les (Dottie) Hull.

Memorial reception will be from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday, August 19, at the Carnegie Art Center, Dodge City. Private interment by Swaim Funeral Chapel was at the Scroggins Mausoleum, Dodge City. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Ford County Historical Society, PO Box 131, Dodge City, KS 67801; or to the Dodge City Arts Council, 701 N.
