Sublette - Elena (Penner) Berg was born on August 31, 1949, the daughter of John and Aganetha (Enns) Penner. She was born at home in Campo 113 Cuahtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Elena was the fifth child of twelve children. She grew up in Campo 113 and was baptized in 1969. On July 13, 1969, she was united in marriage to Wilhelm Berg. Together they went to Canada for work and ended up the following year in Sublette, where their first child was born. In four years, all four children were born, two in Mexico and one in Canada.
Their journey brought them back to Kansas in 1993 where she built her home with Wihelm. Elena helped and supported him with his work at Rolla. They moved around a few times and ended up in Plains, where she endured the loss of her husband on January 8, 2014. After his passing, shed moved to Sublette where she currently was living. She supported herself by cleaning houses.
She had a strong will to live based on her desire to reach an old age. Elena enjoyed flowers and grew a garden with amazing cantaloupes. She also enjoyed going out for coffee and food with her sisters, brothers, friends, and especially with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.She had suffered with her illness for one year and four months and was very sick in the hospital for the last two weeks.
Elena is survived by three children, Agnes Peters and husband Abe of Liberal, Christina Redekop and husband Johnny of Mexico, and Benny Berg and wife Anna of Canada; daughter-in-law, Maria Berg; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren with one on the way; five brothers, and three sisters. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilhelm; son, Johnny Berg; an infant grandson; grandson, Dylan Berg, two brothers; and one sister.
Funeral service will be held at Living Gospel Church, Sublette on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at 10:30 AM with Pastor Gerhard Penner presiding. Burial will follow at Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 from 2:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the family in care of the funeral home.
