Dodge City - Eugene H. Brown, 91, died December 15, 2013 at Trinity Manor, Dodge City . He was born on May 3, 1922 at Windthorst, Kansas the son of Hiram H. and Viola (Hensley) Brown .
He married Evelyn Joan Guinn on August 24, 1945, she preceded him in death on June 24, 1963. He later married Loretta Louise Johnson Barhydt on December 26, 1964, she preceded him in death on January 10, 1998. Mr. Brown worked as a Auctioneer for his father's sale barn in Bucklin during his late teen and early 20's. He served the last years of WWII in the US Army as a Medic. He began working as an operator at the Kansas Power and Light Plant in 1945, retiring as Plant Superintendant after 41 years. After retirement he enjoyed farming and raising cattle. Gene had a great curiosity about life, current events and enjoyed traveling and was very active in his children and grandchildren's lives.
He was a member of the Charles Earnest Scott American Legion Post # 47 of Dodge City.
He is survived by a son David Brown and wife Barbara of Ford, KS; three daughters Kathryn Louise Brown of Taos, N.M.; Roberta E. Lee Brown Jones of Dodge City, KS; Jacque Joan Brown Toney and husband Jerry of Hilton Head, S.C., Step- children Barbara Spohr and husband Norman of Dodge City and Michael Barhydt. He is also survived by eight grandsons, two step grendsons and two great -granddaughters, seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters Eleanor Hawes of Ford, KS; Coral Schmidt of Eugene, Oregon; Joyce Nantz of Vero Beach, Florida; and brother George Brown of Jetmore, and special friend Verna Dakan. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons Paul Kelly Brown and Timothy Dwayne Brown and sisters Helen VanNaman, Marion Hinck, Evelyn Preston, Francis Brown, Wanda Estes Sanders and brothers Jack Brown and H.H Brown.
Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Zach Magnason presiding. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Mullinville. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 from 12:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Manor or Hospice of The Prairie in care of the funeral home.
