SUBLETTE - Evelyn Mae Brown from Sublette, passed away Monday, January 22, 2018 with family at her bedside. She was born October 21, 1931 in Stafford, Kansas, the daughter of Roy H. and Frankie (Jenkins) Meyer.
Evelyn spent her childhood in Stafford, Kansas, graduating from Stafford High School in 1949. On August 21, 1949, Evelyn married her high school sweetheart, Paul Brown, also of Stafford, a marriage that would last 68.5 years. In 1950, the couple moved to Montezuma where they began farming. They started their family of four children in 1951, and over the next nine years, they had two daughters & two sons. In 1958, they moved north of Satanta, continuing to farm and raise cattle. Evelyn was busy raising their young family and supporting her husband, always on the road to piano lessons, dance lessons, sports and school events. She also was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Sublette, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Federation of Women's Club. Evelyn cared for her grandmother and her parents in their older years and did volunteer work for the community. They moved from the farm to Sublette in 1964. Evelyn enjoyed sewing, cooking, taking meals to the fields during harvest, traveling, flying with Paul, spending time with friends and Club events. She and Paul retired from Cattle Empire in Satanta and began traveling throughout the US in the RV. They spent 11 winters in Indio, California and made some great friends there. Evelyn was an energetic, talented woman, daughter, wife, mother & friend who left an impressionable footprint in our lives.
She is survived by her husband Paul; four children, Pamela Kells and husband Darcy, Dee Ann Brown, Rex Brown and wife Rhonda, and Roy Brown and wife Laura; nine grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Leroy Meyer.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 25, 2018 from noon to 7:00 PM at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Sublette. Private funeral service will be held at a later time with immediate family and she will be laid to rest at the Haskell County Cemetery in Sublette. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the St. Catherine Hospice or BrightFocus Foundation-benefiting macular degeneration research in care of Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette - PO Box 607 - Sublette, KS 67877.
