Obituary

DODGE CITY - Flora Maxine (Faulds) Davis, 84, died October 7, 2011 at Lafayette, Louisiana after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born on June 25, 1927 on a farm south of Dodge City. She was the seventh child of Charles P. and Susan Pearl (Allen) Faulds.

Flora attended 8 grades at West Hopewell School and graduated from Dodge City High School in 1946. To attend High School, she moved into town and lived with her sisters, Betty and Alice. After graduation from High School, she worked at May's Drug Store on Gunsmoke Avenue and there met Frank Davis. He used to like to tell people that he chased her until she caught him. On January 7, 1951 they were married at the First United Methodist Church in Dodge City. Their first daughter, Karen, was born 1952. Then, in 1954, they welcomed twins, Cheryl and Daryl, which was a surprise to the family. When she was first married, Flora didn't know how to drive. So she decided to learn and endured several ordeals that included putting the tail light in the tree, bumping a few cars out in the street, the car vapor locking on her, but she accomplished her goal of being able to get the kids to school, 4-H, and the family out to the farm to see her parents regularly.

Flora was a stay-at-home mother until Cheryl and Daryl were in the 6th grade. At that time she decided to work for 443 Lunch Room at the Senior High School, where she stayed for 6 years. In 1972 she started working at Beatty & Kelly Restaurant at Boothill until 1978 and then the Gunsmoke Truck Stop for 11 years. She eventually returned to 443 School District and worked at Sunnyside Elementary School And Beeson Elementary School until her retirement in 2004. Flora's goal was to work until she was 75, but her health required her to stop short of that goal. As determined as she was to learn how to drive, she was equally determined to earn an income that would allow her to do and buy extra things for her family.

Flora joined Eastern Star in 1958 and worked her way up to Worthy Matron in 1987. She said she did it because she was not very comfortable with public speaking and it really had helped her to be able to do things together in groups as getting up in front of a crowd. She received her 50- year pin in 2008. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose, and for years made pies for the Sunday dinners at the lodge. Flora's favorite hobbies were baking and working outdoors. She was especially known for her cinnamon rolls. In the late 1960's, she helped to care for Marla and Mark Stauth, as well as Sharon (Stauth) Place and Carol (Stauth) Black whom she considered "her kids" too. In 2005, Flora and Frank sold their home in Dodge City and moved to Lafayette, LA to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Stephen McCarthy.

Flora is survived by her children, Karen L. Davis and partner Jim Lightbody of San Jose, California, Cheryl E. (Davis) McCarthy of Lafayette, Louisana and Daryl D. Davis and wife Melinda of Gunnison, Colorado; eight grandchildren: Jana McCarthy and fiance Damen Landry, Erin McCarthy and fiance Trey Chatelain of Lafayette, LA, Andrea Hargrave and husband Ben of Baton Rouge, LA, Adrian Hunolt and wife Jaime of Evanston, WY, Bob Hunolt of Ashland, MO, Josh Davis and partner Sarah Hoffmans, Tawnya Sponable and Duane Sponable of Gunnison, CO; nine great-grandchildren: Mikayla Hunolt of Windsor, CO, Ian, Wendell and Clara Hunolt of Evanston, WY; Alexis, Travers and Briley Hunolt of Ashland, MO., Jayce Davis of Gunnison, CO and Emma Chatelain of Lafayette, LA; sisters Betty Mead of Asbury, MO, Alice Haney of Encinitas, CA and Delores Eberly of Neosho, MO; brother-in-law George Scoggins and sister-in-law Velma Faulds of Dodge City, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harold and Donna Davis of McPherson, KS, sisters-in-law Mary McClaren of San Angelo, TX and Arlene Davis of Aurora, CO and many nieces and nephews.
