Fred H. Day, 90, died Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City. He was born on June 17, 1919 on the family farm near Allen, the son of William Culter and Eda (Kaiser) Day.
He grew up in Allen, Kansas and graduated from Allen High School in 1936. Fred then attended Strickler's Business College in Topeka, completing the accounting program. He then enrolled in Emporia State in 1938 and graduated with a B.S. in Commerce in 1942 and a Master's in Business Education in 1952. Fred entered the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was in Midshipmen's school at Columbia University in New York and recieved his commission as Ensign in February of 1943. He was sent to North Africa as a small boat officer. Fred was involved in landings at Licata, Sicily; Salerno, Italy; Anzio, Italy; and Southern France. He served as a Gunnery Officer aboard the carrier CVE 80 Petrof Bay. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on October 19, 1945 with the rank of Lt. JG. Fred then began his teaching career in Plains in October of 1945. He taught business subjects and coached football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and track as he was the only coach at the school. In 1948, he moved to Dodge City to be a business teacher and assistant coach. He then served as head basketball coach from 1953 to 1957, winning the Dodge City TOC basketball tournament in 1957. He also coached tennis and football while in Dodge City. During the summer months from 1952 to 1956, Fred worked a Mayrath Machinery. Fred was also a Hutchinson News carrier from 1968 to 1983. He retired from teaching in 1989 at the age of 70. In February of 1943, he married Myrna Beth Clausen. She preceded him in death on June 21, 1957. Fred married Joyce Salsbury Bodin in April of 1961. She preceded him in death on March 7, 2009.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dodge City and the Lyons Club also of Dodge City.
Fred is survived by one daughter, Lynn Roenfeldt and husband Dr. Richard of Dodge City; four sons, Tom Day and wife Robbye of Little Canada, Minnesota, Larry Day of Hutchinson, Burk Day and finance Tina Grunnels of Ozark, Missouri, and Jeff Day and wife Melissa of Wichita; one sister, Eda Mae Fitchett of Lindsburg; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford and Leslie; and two sisters, Lillian and Eva.
Memorial service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Friday, April 9, 2010 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Kent Groethe presiding. A private family inurnment will be at a later date at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. There is no visitation as cremation has taken place.
