Dodge City - Fred Hornung, 81, died November 24, 2025 at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City. He was born on April 1, 1944 in Dodge City, Kansas the son of Clem and Helen (Heiland) Hornung.
Fred was a 1963 graduate of Windthorst High School and a lifelong resident of the Windthorst and Spearville area. He was a very skilled woodworker building many doll houses for all of his nieces and many other pieces of furniture for various family members. He was also a woodworking teacher for the 4-H clubs in the area. Fred was very instrumental in refurbishing the Christmas Crib at the church in Windthorst. He loved spending time with family and was always ready for a card game. He also loved to play pranks on people and had a ornery sense of humor. Fred loved his dogs and also to take care of feeding any animal he could. He taught all of his nieces and nephews about farm life.
He was a member of the St. Andrews Catholic Church of Wright and the Knights of Columbus of Windthorst.
He is survived by his three sisters Mary Ann Johnson of Dodge City; Sherry Nau and husband Don of Dodge City and Theresa Barnett of Spearville. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Clem and Helen Hornung, one sister Reva Jean Hornung and one brother Gerald "Jerry" Hornung. He is also preceded in death by three brother-in-laws Marvin Johnson, Les Barnett and Orville Brehm, and one sister-in-law Janet Hornung, and one niece Marsha Johnson and one nephew Jeffrey Stevens.
Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church on Saturday November 29, 2025 at 9:30 AM with Rev. Ted Stoecklein presiding. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Windthorst. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Friday, November 28, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM with the family receiving friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Vigil Service will be at 7:00 PM Friday, November 28, 2025 at Immaculate Heart Of Mary Catholic Church in Windthorst.
