Obituary

Satanta - Fred August Wachs, 96, died October 29, 2013 at the Satanta District Hospital. He was born on July 4, 1917 at Kensington, KS the son of Otto and Katie (Grauerholz) Wachs.

Fred graduated from Agra High School in 1935. On August 6, 1950, he married Marge Baker in Glade. She survives. Fred served in the United States Army in the European Theatre during World War II. He came to Satanta from Kensington to work for Pioneer Telephone. After retiring from the phone company, Fred hauled freight for Beaver Express. He also enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture.

He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Ulysses and the American Legion and Lyons Club both of Satanta. Fred served three terms as a Silverhaired legislator and was very active in the Satanta community.

Fred is also survived by one son, Calvin Wachs and wife Rainie of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two daughters, Ruth Hammer and husband Chris of Sublette and Cynthia Irwin and husband David of Garden City; one sister, Laura Klein of Plainville; nine grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Rex and Ray Wachs; a sister-in-law, Thelma Wachs; and a great granddaughter, Krysta Johnston.

Funeral service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Ulysses on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Patrick Gumz presiding. Burial will at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Sublette on Thursday, October 31, 2013 from noon to 8:00 PM.
