Gary S. Nelson, 65, died Sunday, November 7, 2010 at his residence in rural Ford County, KS. He was born on August 14, 1945 at Oakley, KS the son of Wayne and Catherine (Morris) Nelson.
He married Jeri on May 27, 1988, she survives. Gary was on the Police Dept. in Oakley, Kansas for three years and served the public of Dodge City for fifteen and a half years, retiring as Lieutenant. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and loved rebuilding classic cars. Mostly he loved his rural home away from the hustle and bustle of town. Gary was a wonderful husband, father and friend to those who were fortunate enough to earn his love and respect. He will leave an empty spot in their lives but mostly in their hearts.
Survivors include wife Jeri Nelson of the home, four daughters Kisty and husband John Reeves of Bristow, Oklahoma, Amanda Crowe of Sand Springs, Oklahoma,Jennifer Williams of Sand Springs, Oklahoma,Linda and husband James Letzig of St. Joseph, Missouri. He is also survived by three sons Steve Goodhart of Edmond, Oklahoma,Patrick and wife Ashley Nelson of Woodward, Oklahoma, Michael Nelson of Woodward, Oklahoma. One brother Bob Nelson of Grinnell, Kansas, and two sisters Rae Boswich of Cisco, Georgia, Janet Handle of Hays, Kansas. He is also survived by a large number of grandchildren as well as countless friends some of whom he considered family.
He was preceded in death by his parents a sister Miriam and brother DeWayne.
Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Memorials can be made to Hospice of The Prairie or to the Ford County Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
