Dodge City - George Edward Hobbs, 71, died November 16, 2013 at Via Christie St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born on December 30, 1941 in Wichita Falls, Texas, the son of George Washington and Joyce Evelyn (Skinner) Hobbs.
George was a graduate of Lubbock High School in Lubbuck, Texas. He then went on to attend Frank Phillips Community College in Borger, Texas. On April 16, 1976, he married Johnnie Garner in Clovis New Mexico. She survives. George started working for Safeway as a manager when he was 19 years old. He moved to Dodge City in 1983 to work for Safeway. After 40 years in the grocery business, he retired from Heartland Foods. George then drove a truck for Kindsvater Trucking of Dodge City for 11 years. He enjoyed many activities including golf, bowling, fishing, camping, and traveling.
He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Dodge City.
In addition to his wife, Johnnie, George is survived by three daughters, Yvette Tunnell of Wichita, Kris Sweecker of of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Yvonne Benz of Borger, Texas; two sons, Gene Hobbs of Loveland, Colorado and Jerry Hobbs of Gage, Oklahoma; three sisters, Patty Smith and Barbara Crabb both of Tuscon, Arizona; and Jeannie Young of Houston, Texas; 17 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.He is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Siah Edwards presiding. Cremation will follow the service with a private family inurnment at a later date. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 from noon to 8:00 P.M.
