Satanta - George Lee Purcell, 76, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2021 at his home in Satanta. He was born on March 8, 1945 in Carbon, Indiana the son of Archie and Merrie (Kiger) Purcell.
George's early year were spent in Indiana. The family moved to Ulysses his freshman year of high school. George graduated from Ulysses High School in 1963. After graduation, he entered the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. When his enlistment was over, he moved to Michigan.
In 1971, George moved to Kansas. On March 8, 1975, he was united in marriage to Susan Jane Montney. The couple made their home in Ulysses where he worked for KI Drilling. George then took a position with City Service Gas and the family moved to the plant housing community in 1978. In 1986, George and Susan moved to Satanta. George retired from the gas company in 2006.
George was an avid reader. He would often check out a sack of books from the local library. He loved to read westerns and watch old western movies. Another favorite pastime was fishing with his grandson, Miles. Family was important to George and he would do anything for them.
He attended Christ Church of Haskell County in Sublette and previously attended the Christian Church in Ulysses and Sublette.
George is survived by his wife Susan of Satanta; three children, Janel Purcell (Daryl Vilines) of Garden City, Andy Purcell (Barbara) of Satanta, and Benny Purcell (Mollie) of Salina; eight grandchildren, Tyler Dillon of Wichita Falls, Texas, Miles Purcell (Shade Torres) of Montezuma, Gage Roberts of Salina, Abbie Purcell of Satanta, Carter Purcell of Salina, Andrew Love of Satanta, Gera Purcell of Satanta, and Michael Purcell of Satanta; an "adopted granddaughter", Danielle Esparza of Satanta; a great grandson, Elijah Dillon of Wichita Falls, Texas; and a brother, John Purcell of Alabama. He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Betty, Louella, and Maxine; and five brothers, Archie, Bob, Gerald, Walter, and Jess.
The family will be having a non-traditional memorial service on Saturday December 11, 2021 at 5:00 PM at Christ Church of Haskell County, 207 S Inman, Sublette, Kansas where family and friends will be invited to share memories of George. There is no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Shriner's Children's Hospital in care of Swaim Funeral Chapel-PO Box 607-Sublette, Kansas.
