Obituary

SUBLETTE - Gerald "Jed" Lucas, 84, died June 30, 2012 at Satanta District Hospital in Satanta. He was born on December 30, 1927 in Lewis, the son of Wayne and Mildred (Black) Lucas.

Gerald move to Satanta in 1930. The family then moved to the farm in 1934. Jed graduated from Sublette High School in 1945. He served in the National Guard and then in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Riley where he was a photographer for the Army. On December 14, 1951, he married Beulah Kells at the Sublette Christian Church. She survives. Gerald managed the Standard Oil Station before opening Jed and Vern's Repair Shop. He then went to work at Machine Supply in 1963. In 1979, Jed opened Lucas and Sons Auto Supply in Sublette and worked there until his retirement in 1998. He and Beulah also owned and operated the Lark's Nest in Sublette for many years. Gerald was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved playing golf on his day off with his friend and neighbor, Curly Hoskinson. Jed coached his sons in baseball and provided them what they needed for every sport that came along. Mr. Lucas worked hard for the community and never turned away a needy person.

He was a member of the American Legion, Sublette and the Cimarron Valley Golf Club, Satanta. Jed was a past member of the Rotary International, Sublette City Council, Sublette Recreation Board, and volunteer firefighter. Mr. Lucas played semi-pro baseball with the Sublette Swatters.

In addition to his wife Beulah, Jed is survived by five sons, Terry Lucas and wife Nancy of Sublette; Jerry Lucas and wife Brenda of Sublette; Larry Lucas and wife Sharon of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Gary Lucas and wife Kris of Topeka; and Barry Lucas and wife Kelsie of Sublette; two brothers, Wes Lucas of Garden City and Ron Lucas of Satanta; two sisters; Marilyn Schmale of Garden City and Vickie Selby of Denver; 13 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial service will be held at Sublette Methodist Church on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Craig Atkinson presiding. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the book from noon to 5:00 PM on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette. Memorials are suggested to Cimarron Valley Golf Club in care of the funeral home.
