Montezuma - Gladys Koehn, 90, died March 20, 2012 at Bethel Home, Inc. in Montezuma. She was born on October 5, 1921 in Meno, Oklahoma, the daughter of Henry and Hilda (Johnson) Smith.
Gladys grew up in the very small town of Meno, Oklahoma. She was only five when her mother passed away. She attended school in Meno. Gladys married Ernest Koehn on March 19, 1944 in Gultry, Oklahoma. He survives. They lived in California before moving to Montezuma. She enjoyed taking care of her husband and home.
She was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma by Minister David J. Koehn and remained faithful to her vows until her death.
Even though she had no children of her own, she took as avid interest in the lives of her nieces and nephews; wanting to know how we all were doing and what was happening in our lives. We sensed a loyalty to Uncle Ernest and she did what she could to support and help in whatever he endeavored to do. She was apt to look on the bright side of life and was special in many ways.
She was a member of the Montezuma Mennonite Church of Montezuma.
In addition to her husband Ernest, Gladys is survived by one sister, Beatrice Schmidt of Wichita; three half-brothers, George W. Smith of WheatRidge, Colorado, Delton H. Smith of Enid, Oklahoma, and Roger D. Smith of Edmond, Oklahoma; four half-sisters, Gerlene F. Buller of Meno, Oklahoma, Peggy L. Smith of Irving, Texas, Margie D. Welch of Irving, Texas, and Lucinda Fern Sissons of Midwest City, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Myrtle Smith; one brother, Harry G. Smith; and two half-brothers, Marion L. Smith, and Willis Ray Smith.
Funeral service will be held at Montezuma Mennonite Church, Montezuma on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 10:30 AM with Ministers Edwin Classen, Donald Koehn, and Charles Schmidt presiding. Burial will follow at Montezuma Mennonite Church in Montezuma. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City on Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM.
