Obituary

Montezuma - Gloria Ann Schmidt, 80, died October 10, 2021 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born on February 3, 1941 on the family farm northeast of Copeland to Pete G. and Alvina (Unruh) Koehn.

Gloria spent her childhood years on the family farm. She attended school in Copeland. She was baptized on January 22, 1954 by Minister Daniel J. Koehn. She was lifelong attendee and member of the Montezuma Mennonite Church.

On July 10, 1960, Gloria was united in marriage to Lloyd Schmidt. The couple made their home in Montezuma where they raised their two children, Wes and Lana. Lloyd and Gloria lived in Montezuma for their entire married life except for the two years they served in Denver. An interesting fact is that they lived on the same street for most of their 60 years together. They simply moved from west Park Street to east Park Street.

After her children were grown, Gloria worked at Bethel Home in Montezuma. When she and Lloyd retired, they enjoyed taking many bus trips together. Gloria was the planner. She always knew which trips they wanted to attend next. Gloria would wear the tour catalogs out researching and planning. There were many of their trips that they named as their favorite, but the Nova Scotia trip and the Oregon/California Coast always remained their personal favorites. Another fond trip was the time they met Gloria's sister Alfrieda and her husband Lloyd and took a tour to the Bouchard Gardens. Gloria also like to make quilts and care for her flower gardens.

A highlight for Gloria was when her nieces and nephews would come to visit. Throughout the years they would stop by and bring her great nieces and nephews. It always brought a smile to Gloria to be able to care for them.

Those left to cherish the memories include her husband Lloyd of Montezuma; one son, Wes Schmidt and wife Trina of Derby/Cimarron; two grandsons, Andrew Schmidt (Alyssa) of Lake St. Louis, Missouri and Brandon Schmidt (Annie) of Wichita; two step grandchildren, Alex Wynn (Bethany) of Virginia and Lindsey Stepanek (Jonathan) of Hays; two step great grandchildren, Eleanor Wynn and Parker Stepanek; and four siblings, Lincoln Koehn and wife Marjorie of Montezuma, Elma Weaver of Atwater, California, Marilyn Becker and husband Don of Grandview, Idaho, and Dr. Norman Koehn and wife Jill of Wichita. She is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Lana Schmidt; sister Alfrieda Koehn; and a step grandson, Jarett Wynn.

Funeral service will be held at Montezuma Mennonite Church on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Montezuma Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Montezuma on Thursday, October 14, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
