Harold " Bus" Kirmer, 85, died Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Good Samaritan Center in Dodge City. He was born on March 12, 1924 in Odin, Kansas, the son of Nick and Frances (Schneweis) Kirmer.
He married Margaret Juttner in Spearville on February 22, 1949. She survives. Harold was a graduate from Spearville High School in 1941. After graduation, he served his country as a pilot in the U.S. Navy during World War II. For thirty three years he served as the postmaster in Spearville. Following retirement from the post office, he spent the next thirteen years as distribution coordinator for Feist Publications, Inc.
Bus enjoyed all kinds of sports, especially golf. He was often found organizing and playing ballgames with the neighborhood children, even after his own children had become adults. He loved to read history and was self-taught in Spanish.
Harold was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Spearville.
Bus is survived by his wife Margaret of Spearville; two sons, Kevin Kirmer and wife Phyllis of Dodge City and Kurt Kirmer and wife Gayla of Spearville; three daughters, Gail Kirmer of Wichita, Gwen Kulbiski and husband Kelly of Dodge City, and Mary Lou Azeltine and husband LeRoy of Overland Park; one brother Robert Kirmer of Dodge City; three sisters, Delores Boyd of Cimarron, Pat Dvorak of Dodge City, and Judy Johnson of Jamhill, Oregon; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sidney Hirschfeld, and his parents.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Spearville, on Monday, April 27, 2009 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Ted Stoecklein presiding. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Spearville. Vigil service will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 7:00 PM. There will be no visitation. The casket will remain closed.
